Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS)

About the Scale -

The Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) is a psychological evaluation instrument intended to assess a person's ability to recognize, understand, manage, and make use of emotions—both their own and those of others. Emotional intelligence (EI) is essential for personal well-being, relationships with others, and success in professional settings. The EIS provides a systematic approach to assess vital emotional skills, such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and social skills.

Created as a self-assessment tool, the EIS generally consists of a range of statements or questions that participants evaluate according to their level of agreement. The outcomes reveal how well an individual handles emotional situations, expresses feelings, and reacts to others' emotions.

The EIS is commonly utilized in psychological studies, educational contexts, and organizational development, serving as a useful resource for pinpointing strengths and opportunities for improvement in emotional capabilities. By cultivating higher emotional intelligence, individuals can improve their decision-making, conflict resolution abilities, and overall mental well-being.

Developed by Hyde, Pethe, and Dhar (2002), the EIS contains 34 statements, each to be rated on a five-point scale ranging from ‘strongly agree’ (5) to ‘strongly disagree’ (1). The statements relate different components of emotional intelligence like self-awareness, empathy, self-motivation, emotional stability, managing relations, integrity, self-development, value orientation, commitment, and altruistic behavior.

Reliability and Validity: The reliability of the scale was determined by calculating reliability coefficient on a sample of 200 subjects. The split-half coefficient was found to be 0.88.

In order to find out the validity from the coefficient of reliability, the reliability index was calculated, which indicated high validity on account of being 0.93.
